My Social Media Challenge
"Social Media will be the single
most important force in driving social, cultural,
political, economic and environmental change from
now on. "
I look back over the last few
months and I am more convinced this is so and
that we are growing toward effective global integration
of critical solution building at an exponentially
increasing rate.
Of Course the major social networking sites are
increasing their global audience, but more and
more it is the not so major sites where 100s of
1000s of international convos are going on that
ultimately must lead to global collaboration.
Despite being relatively poorly designed and operated,
sites like http://econnect.entrepreneur.com/ http://www.ecademy.com/
http://www.spoke.com/ and http://www.ryze.com/
and many more are being used to create international
acquaintances that will be the foundation for
international relationships.
Social media has slashed barriers.
It is now up to governments, companies and individuals to overcome
the human barriers - distrust, isolationism, competitive
profit seeking-vs.-world-welfare, etc.
The world must collaborate to solve the world's problems.
Drug research companies must create co-operatives
where they can combine resources to create solutions
and share the profits.
The same with energy production.
The world is racing to free itself of fossil fuel
dependency and the countries who are measuring
their wealth in fossil fuel revenues must lead
the way into new technologies, sharing solution
building (and profit) with partners around the
world, or they will find their own economies unsustainable
once a cheap and steady method of sustainable
energy production is achieved.
The internet has become a platform for collaboration
to address every major world ill - global warming,
health, pollution, energy, food production, etc.
and it is now up to humans to utilize this platform
to speed development and delivery of solutions
on a scale never before possible.
Those of us who have been advocates of simply
making social media a reality must now expand
our own horizons and provoke the minds of people
and the traditions of institutions to overcome
their internal barriers to global collaboration
and take advantage of the new tools that make
it possible.
Many of us are marketing savvy people and we must
now "market" to leaders of thought and leaders
of countries that the new tools are prime for
things far greater than sharing one's favorite
music or video. We are "the common man". The common
man built the internet. Never before has the power
of one and the power of multiplication so clearly
demonstrated our ability to effect change.
I urge you all to "get onboard"; believe that
you, individually, can create impetus in the groundswell
and crowdspring that will influence leaders to
hasten changes that will expedite solutions.
When you think about it, it is pretty cool to
realize the power of individual bloggers, great
and small, and our ability to impact the world.
I know you are busy. You are researching, writing
articles, sharing thoughts, paying bills and caring
for your families, but I ask you to let me add
one more challenge to your daily agenda... I challenge
you to add a new spin to your endeavors; I challenge
you to help save the world! Don't believe me? Watch Seth Godin's Talk on the subject.
